The Spring Hill ISD Board of Trustees voted against adopting a resolution related to Senate Bill 11, which concerns a state-organized prayer policy.
Spring Hill ISD students already have the right to pray at school. Texas Education Code § 25.901 affirms that “a public school student has an absolute right to individually, voluntarily, and silently pray or meditate in school in a manner that does not disrupt the instructional or other activities of the school.” SHISD currently provides multiple student-led, voluntary faith-based opportunities, which will remain in place and continue without change.
The Spring Hill ISD Board of Trustees upholds the religious freedom of all students while maintaining that spiritual instruction is the responsibility of families and local faith communities rather than public schools. Board President John Borens stated, “With the Senate Bill 11 vote recorded at this time, the Board understands that the resolution may be revisited at a future meeting should additional information and clarification become available.”
